Lakeside Walk (Lake Catani)

Circuit around Lake Catani through snow-gum woodland. Parks Victoria flags summer wildflowers. Depends on Lake Catani Road (or the Gorge–Catani walking track in winter).

Do not pair: Do not start The Big Walk as a late-afternoon idea after the circuit. Do not treat the campground as overflow when official bookings are full.

Turnaround: Road closed: switch to Gorge / Chalet (winter park at the Chalet) or leave the lake for another day. Do not push a 2WD at a seasonal gate.

  • Lake Catani Road shut — drive-in parking is off. Walk-in camping may still be listed; a lakeside picnic from the car is not.
  • Swimming after rain on slick granite with kids. The lake is alpine and unpatrolled.

Official Parks Victoria pages and the sign in front of you override any guide page.

  • Grade 3
  • 1 hour circuit
  • 3.2 km circuit
  • Effort: easy
  • Best for: Easy plateau walk, wildflowers, campers, families — when Lake Catani Road is open or you honestly walk in

Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on Parks Victoria before you go.

Where you start

Lakeside Day Visitor Area or Lake Catani Campground

Start at the signed lakeside picnic precinct or from the official campground. The circuit is signed through snow-gum woodland. Lake Catani Road is seasonally closed (Parks Victoria: Thursday after King’s Birthday to 15 September inclusive). When the road is shut, this is a walk- or ski-in, not a drive-up loop.

How to get there

  1. When Lake Catani Road is open: turn off sealed Mount Buffalo Road onto the gravel lake road and park at the Lakeside Day Visitor Area or campground as signed. The road is not a caravan shortcut.
  2. Snapshot 13 Sep 2026: Lake Catani Road is closed until 15 September inclusive. Drive-in parking at the lake is off. Campground CLOSED for all camping 31 Aug–30 Oct 2026. Re-check the official park page the morning you go — snow can extend the gate.
  3. When the road is closed: walk, ski or snowshoe from the Gorge / Chalet side on the Gorge–Catani Track (visitor notes ~2 km / 35 min one way, Grade 2). The official Gorge page also lists a 4 km / 1.5 hr return Gorge–Catani link. Confirm the signed figure.
  4. No drinking water in the park. Fill bottles in Bright or Porepunkah. Toilets at the lake depend on season — winter walk-in camping uses a pit toilet; the amenities block is closed.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Walk the signed 3.2 km circuit. Stay on formed track through snow gums — shortcuts through wetland and snow-grass multiply damage.
  2. Treat swimming and canoeing as a separate decision after the walk, not a mid-loop splash. Alpine water is cold. No lifeguard. Follow Parks Victoria water-safety advice.
  3. If you came in on the closed road, budget the walk back to the Gorge as part of the day. A “quick hour at the lake” becomes three hours once you add the access track.
  4. Campers: this circuit is the evening reset. Day visitors should not colonise booked camp sites or treat the jetty as a private deck.

Who this walk is for

Choose the Lakeside Walk when you want an easy plateau hour: snow gums, an alpine lake, and a signed circuit that does not need Horn Road. Parks Victoria’s visitor guide lists 3.2 km / about 1 hour, Grade 3. It suits families, campers and first-timers who already did the Gorge and still have legs.

It is not a flat city lakeside path. Roots, granite and weather still count. It is also not a guaranteed swim day — that is a separate, colder decision.

Road vs walk-in (the real decision)

Lake Catani Road is the whole product in winter and shoulder. When it is closed you cannot “just drive to the loop.” Walk or ski the Gorge–Catani link first, then do the circuit, then walk back. That is a half-day, not a 60-minute tick.

Green season: drive in, park at the day visitor area, walk the loop, leave. Do not treat the campground as overflow parking. Official camping is a different system — day entry is free; a camp site is not.

Swim and paddle realism

Summer swimming and canoeing happen here. The water is alpine-cold. There is no lifeguard. Children need honest supervision, not “they can swim at the local pool.” If wind is up or anyone is underdressed, skip the water and keep the walk.

This site never sells park camping or boat hire. Bring your own craft only if Parks Victoria still allows it on the day, and take it out the same way it went in.

Pairing and when to skip

Classic: Gorge lookouts in the morning, Lakeside if the lake road is open and The Horn failed or you never intended it. Family day: Ladies Bath on the climb, Gorge picnic, optional Lakeside.

Skip the drive-in loop when the road is closed unless the group already planned a walk-in. Skip swimming after rain when granite around the edge is slick. Skip adding The Big Walk underneath — that is another day.

Alpine layers, grip and water matter on this plateau more than a gadget list. Gear hub for packing searches — Amazon stays there, not on this walk page.

Extra tips

  • Best Plan B after a Gorge morning if Horn Road is closed or the Horn carpark is full.
  • Summer wildflowers on the plateau often pair better with Dicksons Falls — this loop is the lake and snow gums.
  • Overnight camping is official Parks Victoria only (bookings.parks.vic.gov.au in green season; winter walk-in is a different product). Never booked here.
  • Printable skeleton: overnight Lake Catani itinerary and family falls + lake day on this site.

Often paired with Gorge Heritage Walk— only if energy and weather allow.
