Mount Buffalo trails & lookouts
Guide updated · grades and open status change — verify Parks Victoria
Start with a clear lookouts vs hard walk decision. The Gorge plus The Horn (if the road allows) covers most first visits. Distances, grades and times below are planning ranges — always confirm on Parks Victoria and park alerts. Weather, seasonal roads and track status change.
Decide before you start
- Easy lookouts / short walks: Gorge Heritage Walk, Ladies Bath / Eurobin Falls, Lakeside circuit — high reward, still real cliffs and slick granite.
- Short alpine summits: The Horn (road-dependent), Cathedral–Hump, The Monolith.
- Hard full-day: The Big Walk — one big walk, shuttle first, early start, all water carried.
Trying two hard walks plus the main lookout is how first visits go wrong. Pick the row that matches your energy, then open the trail page for getting-there detail.

Quick comparison (planning only)
| Walk / lookout | Effort | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Horn | moderate | 20 minutes one way (about 40–45 minutes return plus photos) | Summit views, sunset, a short alpine finish — only if Horn Road is open and you can park |
| The Big Walk | hard | 4–5 hours one way | Fit walkers who want the full foothills-to-plateau story in one day — shuttle first |
| Gorge Heritage Walk | easy | About 40–60 minutes return | First-timers, families, history + lookouts without a big climb |
| Lakeside Walk | easy | 1 hour circuit | Easy plateau walk, wildflowers, campers, families — when Lake Catani Road is open or you honestly walk in |
| Eurobin Falls | easy | 20 minutes one way | Short waterfall stop, hot-day swim, first pull-off on the climb |
| Cathedral–Hump | moderate | 30 minutes one way | Granite formations without committing to The Horn road — the usual Horn Plan B |
| Dicksons Falls | easy | 1 hour return | Summer wildflowers, a quieter Cresta-side walk |
| The Monolith | moderate | 40 minutes | A named granite tor close to the Gorge / Lakeside side |
