Things to do in Mount Buffalo

Most first visits revolve around Gorge lookouts, then The Horn if Horn Road is open, with Ladies Bath or Lakeside as the easy add. Winter snowplay, The Big Walk and overnight Catani are different days. Do not try to collect every track on a first visit.

Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park entry (free) and official Parks Victoria camping bookings are never affiliated.

Day one rule

Pick one primary experience (usually Gorge lookouts). The Horn only if the road is open and you can park. Do not collect The Big Walk on the same first hour.

Weather / road / energy bail-out

Gorge lookouts, Ladies Bath or Cathedral–Hump beat a forced Horn or a late Big Walk. Bail-outs are competence.

Overnight / hard filter

The Big Walk needs a shuttle day. Lake Catani overnight is official Parks Victoria only. Climbing and hang-gliding are earned, not impulse.

  1. 1

The Gorge lookouts & Chalet precinct

Icon lookouts · Grade 3 · sealed road

The default first hour: 200 m granite cliffs, Pulpit Rock / Wilkinsons lookouts, Heritage Walk, toilets. Historic Chalet is view-from-outside and garden only (Parks Victoria, 14 Aug 2026) — not a hotel. In winter park at the Chalet; the Gorge day-visitor carpark is closed.

  2. 2

    The Horn (1,723 m)

    500 m one way · Grade 3 · road-dependent

Short steep summit when Horn Road is open. Tiny carpark — full means leave, not verge-park. Not a winter drive. Sunset needs a headlamp. Cathedral–Hump is the on-site substitute.

  3. 3

    Eurobin Falls & Ladies Bath

    560 m one way · Grade 3 · family-friendly with care

Short waterfall stop on the sealed climb. Clear pool on a hot day. Slick granite. Easy family add-on — not The Big Walk, and not a substitute for Gorge lookouts.

  4. 4

Lake Catani — swim, paddle, camp

Seasonal road · 3.2 km circuit · official camping only

Alpine lake in snow gums. Summer swimming and canoeing — cold water, no lifeguard. Seasonal gravel road. Campground is official Parks Victoria only, never booked here.

  5. 5

    Granite tors, galleries & wildflowers

    Plateau · Grade 3 · Horn Plan B

Cathedral–Hump, The Monolith, Chalwell Galleries. Summer wildflowers on Dicksons Falls Nature Walk. Galleries are steep and narrow — not stroller loops. Cathedral–Hump is the Horn substitute when the gravel road is closed.

  6. 6

Winter snowplay — Cresta & Dingo Dell

Winter · family · no lifts

Tobogganing, snow play, marked XC and snowshoeing. No lift-served downhill. Carry chains when signed. Horn Road and Lake Catani Road are usually closed — this is a different day type, not an add-on after The Horn.

  7. 7

    The Big Walk

    Advanced day · point-to-point · shuttle required

10.2 km / 4–5 hours one way, Grade 3, about 1,000 m gain. Second car or booked pickup first. The park’s proper day’s work — not an extra after a Gorge-and-Horn morning.

  8. 8

    Climbing, abseiling, hang-gliding

    Experienced only · intentions book

Gorge cliffs are a real climbing area. Sign the intentions book at the Gorge info shelter. Hang-gliding from the platform is for experienced, permitted pilots only. Not a first-visit extra.
