Where to stay near Mount Buffalo

Prioritise official Parks Victoria camping when that product fits your trip — mornings become walks, not long drives. When you want commercial hotels, guesthouses or holiday homes, base in the valley: Bright for services, Porepunkah for the closest turn-off, Myrtleford or Wangaratta if Bright is full. Official park camping: Parks Victoria — official bookings.

Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park entry (free) and official Parks Victoria camping bookings are never affiliated.

Last town by intent

Fuel, food and medical live in the valley — not at Horn Picnic Area. Official Lake Catani camping stays on Parks Victoria bookings. Commercial beds below are optional.

  • Families / first Gorge morning: Bright for shops and fuel, then the sealed climb. Picnic at the Gorge; do not count on Chalet café service.
  • Closest turn-off / early Horn attempt: Porepunkah. Confirm Horn Road before you leave town.
  • When Bright is full: Myrtleford (west valley) or Wangaratta (Hume / rail, ~1.5 hours — a through-base, not a first-timer Buffalo night).
  • Medical: town services in Bright and Wangaratta — verify hours. Emergencies 000. Plateau reception is poor.
