- Time: 2–4 hours for lookouts + picnic; half day+ if you add The Monolith or Lakeside

Why the Gorge is the default first stop
If someone says “we’re going up Mount Buffalo,” they usually mean this precinct: sealed road all the way, toilets, picnic space, and a cliff edge that actually feels alpine. The Gorge sits on about 200 m of granite with views toward the Alps. It is the right first hour — not a checklist to finish before lunch.
Treat the Gorge as orientation. Nail the lookouts in decent light, decide honestly whether energy supports The Monolith or a Lake Catani circuit, and only then think about The Horn (a separate road, a separate parking problem, and a winter closure).
Mount Buffalo Chalet — heritage, not a default hotel
The timber Chalet (1910, Victorian Heritage Register) is one of Victoria’s best-known alpine buildings. Parks Victoria’s Gorge page (checked 14 Aug 2026) says you can appreciate it from the outside and explore the terraced European garden. It does not list hotel rooms or a public café inside. Do not plan a stay here.
Parks Victoria is separately building new roofed accommodation in the park. That project is not the historic Chalet. Check the official page for any lodge opening dates.
Lookouts and the Heritage Walk
Parks Victoria lists Gorge lookouts as Grade 3 with various short distances from the Gorge carpark. The dedicated Gorge page lists the Heritage Walk as 2.5 km / about 1 hour return; the visitor guide lists 2.0 km / 40 minutes. Use on-site signs. It interprets park history through the eyes of Alice Manfield (Guide Alice). Stay on formed tracks; granite slabs get slick after rain or ice.
The Underground River track (2.2 km / 40 min one way, Grade 3) leads toward Billson’s and Haunted Gorge lookouts. Parks Victoria is explicit: do not enter the Underground River cave without an experienced guide and appropriate equipment.

Practical tips
- Use toilets here before committing to The Horn (nearest toilets to the Horn picnic area are at Cathedral Saddle).
- In winter park at the Chalet — Parks Victoria closes the Gorge day-visitor carpark. In green season arrive early on holidays; the Gorge carpark is the main pinch point.
- Hang-gliding from the platform near the Gorge is for experienced, permitted pilots only — not a spectator “try it” activity.
