Lake Catani

Lake Catani is the park’s main camp. Snow gums, alpine lake, unpowered sites. Book only at bookings.parks.vic.gov.au or 13 1963. This site does not take bookings, sell camping, or list dollar rates as facts. Day entry is free; a camp site is not.
Green season: about Melbourne Cup weekend to the end of April — book ahead. Winter: Friday before King’s Birthday to the end of August, walk/ski/snowshoe-in, free, pit toilet only, amenities block closed. Shoulder months: usually closed. Snapshot 13 Sep 2026: Lake Catani Road closed until 15 September; campground CLOSED for all camping 31 Aug–30 Oct 2026 — do not walk in for a night in this window. Verify live.
One short walk on arrival day. The Big Walk is a different itinerary. Remote hike-in (Mount McLeod / Rocky Creek) is a different permit and a longer walk while Reservoir Road is closed.
Verify the live booking page and Parks Victoria campground notes before you leave home. This plan is unofficial orientation only.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on Parks Victoria before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Before you leave home
Book the official site — or plan a winter walk-in
Green season: book at bookings.parks.vic.gov.au. Confirm live fees, peak minimum nights and any half-price policy on that page, not here. Winter walk-in: no booking, road closed, self-sufficient. Pack all drinking water or treatment — Parks Victoria: no drinking water in the park.
Arrival morning
Bright fuel, then the plateau
When Lake Catani Road is open: gravel in, park at the campground as signed, set up. When the road is closed: park on the Gorge / Chalet side and walk or ski the Gorge–Catani link first. That access is part of the day, not admin.
Arrival afternoon
Set up, then one short walk
Lakeside circuit (3.2 km / 1 hour) or Gorge Heritage Walk if you still have legs. Swim or paddle only as a separate, cold-water decision — no lifeguard. Do not start The Big Walk as a late-afternoon idea.
Evening
Lake, not a road cruise
Snow gums, cold air, poor reception. Fires only in existing structures and never on Total Fire Ban. No generators, no pets. Tell someone you are in. Early night — 1,300 m is colder than Bright.
Next morning
Horn or Gorge, then pack down
If Horn Road is open, do The Horn early. Otherwise Gorge lookouts and The Monolith. Pack down before checkout rules on your booking. Leave a daylight buffer for the gravel road and the sealed descent.
Departure
Optional Ladies Bath on the way down
Only if the group still wants water. Otherwise Bright food and a shower you do not have to treat. Do not add a remote hike-in “because we have another night in the car.”

Parking & access tips
- Lake Catani Road is 2WD when open, and closed Thursday after King’s Birthday to 15 September inclusive.
- Winter walk-in: do not assume a day-visitor carpark at the lake.
- No generators. No pets. Fires only in existing structures; Total Fire Ban rules win.
- Do not colonise neighbouring sites or treat the jetty as a private deck.
- Reservoir Road (remote hike-in) is a different seasonal closure — not this campground.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Freedom camping (prohibited)
- Remote Mount McLeod as overflow
- The Big Walk as a late arrival-day extra
- A green-season stay without an official booking
- Swimming after dark or in high wind
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Families and walkers who want a snow-gum lakeside night
- People who will book official Parks Victoria camping only
- Winter walk-in groups who are actually self-sufficient
- Not anyone hoping this site can take a booking
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If the booking page is full: Bright / Porepunkah bed — do not freedom-camp
- If Lake Catani Road is closed: walk-in only, or change the trip
- If you have no water plan: do not stay
- If Horn Road is closed next morning: Gorge + Monolith still completes the overnight
What success looks like
- Official site used, or an honest winter walk-in
- One short walk, one night, one morning lookout
- No invented remote camp
- Notes for next time: earlier booking, or a dedicated Big Walk day from Bright

- Lakeside Walk (Lake Catani)Circuit around Lake Catani through snow-gum woodland. Parks Victoria flags summer wildflowers. Depends on Lake Catani Road (or the Gorge–Catani walking track in winter).
- Gorge Heritage WalkShort interpretive circuit from the Gorge precinct exploring park history through the eyes of Alice Manfield, with easy access to the cliff lookouts. Parks Victoria’s Gorge page lists 2.5 km / 1 hour return; the visitor guide lists 2.0 km / 40 minutes.
- The HornHighest point in the park at 1,723 m. A short, steep granite climb from Horn Picnic Area to a 360° lookout over the plateau, the Alps and the Buckland Valley. Entirely dependent on Horn Road being open.
