Full day: The Big Walk + waterfall cool-off

7–9 hours including shuttle · Best for: Fit walkers with two cars or a booked pickup

Point-to-point 10.2 km / 4–5 hours uphill from Eurobin Creek to the Gorge, then an optional Ladies Bath stop on the drive down. Not a first-visit default.

This is a working day, not a first-visit default. Parks Victoria lists The Big Walk as 10.2 km, 4–5 hours one way, Grade 3, steep track, about 1,000 m of gain. Some write-ups say 11.3 km or Grade 4 — treat that as a reminder it is a sustained climb, and use the official visitor-guide figure.

You need a finish-car plan before anyone leaves the lower trailhead. Hitching the sealed road is a hope, not a timetable. Uphill (Eurobin Creek → Gorge) is the usual direction: you finish at toilets, picnic space and the lookouts.

Do not add a sunset Horn unless you already know the park, Horn Road is open, and everyone still has water and daylight. Finish at the Gorge. Ladies Bath on the drive down is the only honest extra.

Verify Parks Victoria alerts and a High Country forecast the morning you leave. Ice on the upper third turns this into a different walk. This plan is a skeleton, not live status.

Track status, weather and closures change — verify on Parks Victoria before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. Night before

Place the shuttle and write the reverse clock

Agree who parks at the Gorge and who drops at Eurobin Creek. Screenshot alerts. Pack 2+ L water each, food, map, headlamp, layers. Latest acceptable Gorge arrival time goes on a note in both cars. If you are not there by that time, the next road crossing is a bail-out, not a debate.

  2. 07:00–08:00

    Cars in place

Leave Bright early. Place the Gorge car first (winter: Chalet carpark if the Gorge bay is closed), then drop at Eurobin Creek Picnic Area. Toilets there. Do not start uphill with no finish plan.

  3. 08:00–08:20

    Walk starts uphill

Signed Big Walk from Eurobin Creek. This is not the Ladies Bath trailhead — wrong carpark unravels the day. Start the clock. Tell someone your direction and latest finish.

  4. 08:20–12:00

Climb — road crossings are decision gates

Eat on the track. Do not ration water hoping for a tap — Parks Victoria says there is no drinking water in the park. At each road crossing: continue, or bail and wait for the pickup. Carry the official map so you can tell a driver where to stop.

  5. 12:00–13:30

    Upper third and Gorge finish

Vegetation and granite change. Alps views open. The last hour is where fatigue and ice show up. Finish at the Gorge precinct: toilets, food, lookouts. Pickup or second car. Do not invent The Horn underneath this.

  6. 13:30–15:00

Optional Ladies Bath on the descent

Only if legs allow and the roadside bay is honest. 560 m / 20 min one way. Slick granite. Otherwise drive to Bright and eat.

  7. 15:00+

    Hard turn toward Bright

A 4–5 hour climb plus shuttle faff is already a full day. Skip sunset Horn. Skip remote hike-in talk. Get the second car home while everyone can still drive the winding road.

Parking & access tips

  • Leave a car at the Gorge (or Chalet in winter) before you start — not “we’ll hitch”.
  • Eurobin Creek picnic area has toilets; use them. It is not the Ladies Bath pull-off.
  • Road crossings are bail-outs — know which one you are at before you phone a driver.
  • Do not leave bags visible in either car.
  • Build shuttle faff into the clock. Two cars moving on a winding road is not five minutes.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • The Horn as a mandatory add-on after the climb
  • Starting after 11 am from Bright
  • A single-car “we’ll figure it out” shuttle
  • Remote Mount McLeod overnight as overflow
  • Ice on the upper third treated as a summer Grade 3

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Fit walkers who have already done a Gorge / Horn day
  • Groups with two cars or a booked pickup time
  • People who will bail at a road crossing if the clock fails
  • Not first-timers, not kids on a first plateau visit

Decision gates (say them out loud)

  • If you cannot place a second car: pick a different itinerary
  • If a Total Fire Ban or worse is forecast: cancel the full walk
  • If anyone is new to sustained climbs: walk a section only
  • If you are not at the Gorge by the written time: next road crossing, not “push on”

What success looks like

  • Both cars and all walkers back in Bright with daylight
  • One point-to-point completed, or an honest shortened section
  • No Horn encore
  • Notes for next time: earlier start or a Catani overnight instead

Related trail guides

  • The Big WalkPoint-to-point climb from Eurobin Creek Picnic Area (park entrance) to the Gorge Day Visitor Area. About 1,000 m of elevation gain through changing vegetation and granite. Not a circuit. Needs a shuttle.
  • Ladies Bath Falls & Eurobin FallsEasy walk to Ladies Bath Falls (clear pool) and Eurobin Falls on Crystal Brook. Classic stop on the sealed road up from the entrance.
  • Gorge Heritage WalkShort interpretive circuit from the Gorge precinct exploring park history through the eyes of Alice Manfield, with easy access to the cliff lookouts. Parks Victoria’s Gorge page lists 2.5 km / 1 hour return; the visitor guide lists 2.0 km / 40 minutes.
