People search “Mount Buffalo snow” and “snow cam” expecting a resort. What they get is a granite plateau with family snowplay nodes and a serious alpine road. That can be a brilliant day if you packed chains and honesty.
There are no downhill lifts. Falls Creek and Hotham are different parks and different days. Marketplace five-day Melbourne trips that say “Victorian Alps” are not a Buffalo snowplay morning.
Confirm VicRoads, Parks Victoria and emergency.vic.gov.au the morning you leave. This page is not live road status.

Cresta Valley and Dingo Dell are the signed snowplay and toboggan areas. Marked XC and snowshoe exist for people with the gear and skill. This is not a beginner substitute for a groomed resort trail if you have never skied.
A café often operates at Dingo Dell in winter — confirm hours. Wet snow soaks jeans in minutes. Waterproof pants are not optional fashion.
Chains are the entry ticket
Parks Victoria: chains must be carried on all days indicated at the Entrance Station, for every vehicle class including 4WD, and fitted where signs say. Fit-check them at home on the tyres you will actually drive.
If you cannot fit the chains in the driveway, do not learn on the mountain. If signs require chains and you left them in Bright, turn around.
Closed roads are closed
Do not treat a closed Horn Road as a “short walk to the summit” with kids in cotton hoodies. That is a winter alpine approach.
Lake Catani winter camping is a separate walk/ski-in with a pit toilet — plan it, do not stumble into it after sledding. Reservoir Road’s longer closure is for remote hike-in, not snowplay.
Cresta is not Dicksons Falls in July
Dicksons Falls Nature Walk is a summer wildflower / plateau-edge pad. In winter Cresta is a snowplay precinct. Do not cut across sled runs to “find the pad.” If you cannot see the walking line, turn around.
Gorge lookouts still work
If you want cliffs as well as snow: park at the Chalet (Gorge bay closed), walk across, then continue to Cresta. Wind layer on. Skip this if the group only came to play in snow.
Failure modes worth saying out loud
No chains → stuck on the climb or fined. Fix: fit-check at home or stay in Bright.
Late departure on a short winter day → icy dusk descent with wet kids. Fix: leave earlier than you think.
Closed-road “shortcut” to The Horn → alpine incident. Fix: stay in signed snowplay areas.
Expecting Falls Creek lifts → disappointment. Fix: this park is snowplay.
Where this sits in a wider Buffalo plan
Winter snowplay is a different day type from Gorge + Horn. Do not stack them unless the group is honest about daylight and layers.

FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Do 4WDs need chains?
Yes, when signage requires them to be carried and fitted. Parks Victoria is explicit: all classes of vehicle, including four-wheel drives. Penalties apply.
Is there downhill skiing?
No lift-served downhill on Mount Buffalo. Snowplay, tobogganing, marked XC and snowshoeing at Cresta Valley and Dingo Dell. For lift-served skiing go to another alpine resort — that is a different trip.
Can I drive to The Horn in July?
Usually no. Horn Road is closed from the Thursday after King’s Birthday to 15 September inclusive (checked 14 Aug 2026). Walking or skiing the closed road is a different alpine trip, not a 20-minute walk from the car.
Where do I park for the Gorge in winter?
Parks Victoria closes the Gorge day-visitor carpark in winter. Park at the Mount Buffalo Chalet and walk the short way to the lookouts and toilets.
Is the Dingo Dell café guaranteed?
A café often operates at Dingo Dell in winter. Treat hours as live — verify. Pack a thermos anyway.
