Lake Catani camping: seasons and self-sufficiency
How official Lake Catani camping actually works — summer bookings and fees, winter walk-in free camping, closed shoulders, and why you carry drinking water.

Best for: People planning a plateau night
Unofficial guide — always verify track conditions, closures, fees and safety with Parks Victoria. Place photos are Wikimedia Commons / CC where credited — not official Parks Victoria imagery and not live conditions.
Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park entry (free) and official Parks Victoria camping bookings are never affiliated.

Lake Catani is the park’s lakeside camp in snow-gum woodland — unpowered, family-friendly when the summer facilities are open. It is not a fallback car park and it is not a hotel.
Treat summer and winter as different products that share a name. Mixing them is how people arrive in July expecting hot showers.
Book only at bookings.parks.vic.gov.au or 13 1963. This site does not take bookings or list nightly rates.
Free day entry vs paid camping — stop mixing them up
Day entry to Mount Buffalo is free according to the Parks Victoria visitor guide (confirm live). A camp site is not free in green season. Those are two systems. This site never affiliates park camping fees.
If someone tells you “the park is free so we can just stay,” they have mixed the products. Green-season camping is booked and paid on the official page.
Two seasons, not one campground

Summer / green: bookings, fees, flush toilets and hot showers, drive-in on Lake Catani Road when that road is open. Roughly Melbourne Cup weekend to the end of April — verify live dates.
Winter: Friday before King’s Birthday to the end of August, free, no booking, walk/ski/snowshoe-in from a closed gate, pit toilet only, amenities block closed. Snapshot 13 Sep 2026: Parks Victoria lists the campground CLOSED for all camping 31 Aug–30 Oct 2026 (that overlay wins over leftover walk-in wording on the same page). Lake Catani Road closed until 15 September inclusive.
The months in between are closed. Do not invent a shoulder stay.
Road vs walk-in
When Lake Catani Road is open, drive in, park at the campground as signed, set up. The road is not a caravan shortcut.
When the road is closed, the loop and the camp are a walk- or ski-in. The Gorge–Catani link is part of the day, not admin. A “quick hour at the lake” becomes three hours once you add access.
Self-sufficiency and rules that surprise people
Carry or treat all drinking water. No generators. No pets (assistance dogs, official conditions). Fires only in existing structures; Total Fire Ban and Catastrophic ratings win.
Reception is poor. Install Emergency+. Tell someone you are in. 1,300 m is colder than Bright — pack a real sleep system.
Remote hike-in is not overflow
Mount McLeod and Rocky Creek from Reservoir Picnic Area are tiny bookable hike-in sites, fuel-stove only. They are not the overflow when Lake Catani is full.
Reservoir Road has its own longer winter closure (Thursday after King’s Birthday to the Thursday before Melbourne Cup — 29 Oct 2026 in the current snapshot). That walk gets longer while the gate is shut.
What to do once you have a site
Arrival day: set up, then one short walk — Lakeside circuit (3.2 km) or Gorge Heritage Walk. Do not start The Big Walk as a late-afternoon idea.
Next morning: The Horn if the road is open, otherwise Gorge lookouts and The Monolith. Pack down before checkout rules on your booking.
When the campground is full
Bright or Porepunkah is the Plan B. Official park camping stays on Parks Victoria. Gateway commercial beds may earn a commission; park camping never does.
Do not colonise neighbouring sites, treat the jetty as a private deck, or invent a pull-off camp on the sealed road.
Where this sits in a wider Buffalo plan
An overnight makes Gorge mornings into walks, not drives. It does not turn The Big Walk into a casual add-on.

FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Are the showers open in July?
No. Parks Victoria closes the amenities block in winter. A pit toilet behind the stone hut is the winter facility.
Can I drink the lake or the taps?
Campers must be self-sufficient with drinking water. Treat natural sources. Do not assume taps are potable. Parks Victoria: no drinking water is available anywhere in the park.
Is winter camping free?
Parks Victoria’s winter walk-in product (Friday before King’s Birthday to the end of August) is free and unbooked. That does not make it easy: the road is closed, you walk or ski in, and facilities are a pit toilet.
Can I stay if Lake Catani is full?
Book a Bright or Porepunkah bed. Do not freedom-camp. Remote hike-in sites (Mount McLeod, Rocky Creek) are a different permit and a longer walk — not overflow.
Can I swim or paddle?
Summer swimming and canoeing happen here. The water is alpine-cold. There is no lifeguard. Treat it as a separate decision from the walk or the camp booking.
