Horn Road closed or the carpark is full: Plan B without wrecking the day
Decision first: when Horn Road is seasonally shut or the five-space picnic area is full, reverse to Cathedral–Hump or the Gorge — do not verge-park or invent a closed-road walk to the summit.

Best for: Visitors whose Horn summit just died at a closed gate or a full picnic area
Unofficial guide — always verify track conditions, closures, fees and safety with Parks Victoria. Place photos are Wikimedia Commons / CC where credited — not official Parks Victoria imagery and not live conditions.
Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park entry (free) and official Parks Victoria camping bookings are never affiliated.

Decision first: if Horn Road is shut or the picnic area is already full, the summit product for today is over. Cathedral–Hump or the Gorge still make a Mount Buffalo day. Forcing a park, walking a closed gravel road, or stacking The Big Walk in revenge does not.
This is unofficial planning from Parks Victoria public pages — not a field diary. Re-check the park page the morning you leave Bright.
What failed
Two failure modes own this walk: the seasonal gate, and the carpark. Parks Victoria’s Horn Road closure is a calendar, not a rumour. The picnic area at the end of the gravel is not Echo Point — visitor notes often cite about five spaces.
The day is not “ruined” unless The Horn was the only product you packed. Gorge lookouts still exist. Cathedral–Hump is the granite substitute on the sealed plateau road.
Same-day Plan B

If you still have a Bright-based half-day: Gorge Heritage Walk (winter: park at the Chalet) plus Cathedral–Hump if legs remain. Ladies Bath on the descent if you have time. Skip inventing a Horn encore.
If Lake Catani Road is open, Lakeside is a calmer Plan B. If it is also seasonally closed (same 15 September window), do not add a closed-gate lake to a closed-gate Horn.
What not to do
Do not verge-park, block the turning circle, or walk a closed gravel road as a cheat code. Do not pair a failed Horn with The Big Walk as revenge. Official pages and the sign in front of you override this article.
FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is Horn Road open in August?
Usually no. Parks Victoria closes it from the Thursday after King’s Birthday to 15 September inclusive. Re-checked 20 Aug 2026: that window is in force. Snow can keep the gate shut longer. Check the official park page the morning you go.
Can we walk the closed road to The Horn?
That is a different alpine trip, not the 20-minute visitor-guide walk from the picnic area. Do not treat a seasonal gate as a walking track unless you already planned a long, equipped day and official notices allow it.
What if the five parks are taken?
Reverse. Cathedral Saddle / Cathedral–Hump or back to the Gorge. Waiting on the turning circle is how the walk fails for everyone behind you.
